simple “sweetheart” valentines

It’s nearly Valentine’s Day, and for the first time we have a student in our home! Our preschooler will be taking her little treats to school next Friday, and since her new baby sister is due just 6 days afterwards…I thought it best to get a jump on it.

So, my goals were to keep them:

  • easy and super budget-friendly
  • tasty / attractive
  • using age-appropriate wording
  • freezer-friendly
  • easy for “Mr. Kloverhouse” to assemble should I be in the hospital with a newborn

My first thought was to order each child a book through Scholastic at just $1 a piece, but that would have been $30, so let’s see if this option kept me under that mark…

Supplies needed (non-food items):

  • treat bags (two 20 count) Target dollar section = $2
  • ties that come with the bag or ribbon (I chose ribbon b/c I had it on-hand.  Pics show ties.) = Free
  • heart stickers or cut-outs (I had a heart diecut, so I chose that option over purchasing stickers.) = Free
  • hole punch = Free
  • Washi tape (optional) Target dollar section = $1
  • Blank Valentine cards (Target dollar section) = $3
Supplies needed (food items):
  • heart-shaped strawberry/vanilla marshmallows (I bought 3 bags at $.99 each.) = $2.98
  • 1 bag of baking chocolate (I already had a bag of pink on-hand, so mine was free, but for estimating cost sake, I’ll add it in as a purchase.) = $4.99 (Price listed on Amazon)
  • Valentine sprinkles (Wilton Micro Hearts) = $4.49
  • Dove chocolate hearts = $3.49

Grand total: $21.95  (My actual total, subtracting the baking chocolate: $16.96)

So, not bad!  Definitely a little more work than the books, but the girls helped me out and we got to exercise our creativity.

Steps:

  1. Place marshmallows on parchment paper (in pairs of pink and white)
  2. Melt baking chocolate and unwrap Dove chocolate hearts
  3. Using a spoon, spread baking chocolate on the marshmallows
  4. Sprinkle each white marshmallow with the sprinkles, and place a Dove heart on each pink marshmallow (b/c chocolate on a strawberry marshmallow is just the right thing to do, right?!)
  5. Repeat until all marshmallows are decorated
  6. Place in a freezer-safe container and freeze until needed

  1. In the meantime…create cards
  2. Pair cards according to color combos desired
  3. Cut cards in half (I love my Martha Stewart paper trimmer)
  4. Punch heart-shaped hole in each card or affix a heart sticker to each front
  5. Affix the cutout of another color inside the card so that it’s visible through the opening (I used “Quick Dry” Tacky Glue)
  6. Write the words: “You are a Sweet” allowing the cutout or sticker to say “heart” for you
  7. Help your little sign the inside of the card or fill it out for them

  1. Once ready to assemble, place a pair of marshmallow hearts in each treat bag
  2. Punch a hole in the corner of both the bag a card
  3. Attach the card to the bag using either the ties or strings
  4. Secure bag’s seal with a piece of decorative Washi tape (optional)
  5. Done!

(Also an option…Rice Krispie Treat hearts (using a cookie cutter).  Simply prepare the Rice Krispie Treats, adding the sprinkles in while mixing.  Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper, spread the treats out onto the pan, cover with another sheet of parchment paper, roll flat, and refrigerate until firm.  Using the cookie cutter, cut out hearts, place in bags, tie and done!  That would be an even cheaper option, but I liked that the mini marshmallows were different and could freeze well for a few days.)

a different way to play with window clings!

during a recent trip to the craft store (michael’s), i raided their clearance bins – buying up all kinds of little artsy crafts and kits.  i picked up two of everything, b/c i have two little girls that are still working on the art of sharing…
one of the little things i found was this adorable little kit that included a sheet of pixies/fairies, flowers, birds, butterflies, etc. and a laminated background.  i gave each of the girls a kit, and we headed outside to play with them on the patio.  for a few minutes, things were going well, but then the little clings started to curl in heat and fall to the ground, collecting dust and dirt…this wasn’t going to work.
light bulb.
(i can’t wait to see despicable me 2 btw!  haha  i think hubs and i get as into those little yellow guys as much as our kids do.  i don’t know what they’re called, but around here we call them the ‘pip-squeaks.’  i’m too lazy to google while writing, so i will afterwards, now that i’m thinking about it…  anyway, major rabbit trail…  sorry.)
i taped the background sheets to the OUTSIDE of our sliding glass door, and the girls were able to play with the fairies, birds, and butterflies on the INSIDE.
so simple.  so cute.  so wise, right?  haha

b/c our second floor pops out a good foot or so, the slider is well-protected from above by the house.  the rain hasn’t damaged the paper scenery one bit, so i’ve actually had it up for about six days now.  the kids are still playing with them.

b/c it has been such a hit and so easy to do, i plan on laminating backgrounds for any future clings we purchase.  i could print something off or let the kids create their own scenes.
the possibilities are endless!  best two dollars i’ve spent this month…on crafts, that is.
(that blueberry bagel from panera was tops, too.  just sayin.’)

like what you see?

weekend pin-it party #4

wow!  there are some really awesome things out there!  every week, since joining in these pin-it parties, i have been amazed at the number of really great posts, tips, ideas, recipes, and projects everyone has to share!  God has made a lot of creative beings!  well, actually, i think He made us ALL creative beings; it’s just unfortunate that only a handful share their *stuff* online!  🙂

so, one of my favorite things from last week’s party was “lovey lane.”  i think this idea is adorable and fun!  i plan on sharing ava’s ‘claire.’  ‘claire,’ named by my husband, has been with us since before ava’s arrival.  i spotted her at the children’s clothing store crazy 8’s that fall/winter of 2009, and i thought she was sooo cute!  had i known that ava would cherish her so, i would’ve bought out the entire stock!  (we’ve lost her a few times, and mommy was in panic mode!)  but, then again, all of her little stains and stitch-ups make her even more precious to us, so i don’t know that a stand-in would’ve ever done the job anyway.

ava and ‘claire’ are never too far from each other, and she has probably slept without her ‘claire’ maybe like twice in the last three years!  and that’s only b/c she likes to stash ‘claire’ in hiding spots, and then, we can’t find her!  like tonight, ava remembered that she tucked her away in the drawer where we keep our electronics and playing cards.  yeah…wouldn’t have thought of that hiding spot too easily!

preciousness…

anyway, THANK YOU for linking up each week!  i am thoroughly enjoying this opportunity and exposure to such wonderful content!  you are all awesome!

have a great weekend, everyone!

butterflies in the kitchen!

i hope you’ve been reading our summer series this past week! if you’re just stopping by for the first time, you can access the post explaining the series here. also, we have a fantastic giveaway included that will shut off tonight, cinderella time, so hurry on over and enter! you can do that in today’s link-up party as well! i’m excited to see all of these summery posts! summer, while it is fun and hot, it can also pose its challenges…mostly revolving around time and money, of course! so, reading inspiring posts has helped me out a lot as a young mom of three very rambunctious little people. (well, eden’s only 10 weeks old, so i guess she’s more laid back than the other two!)

here’s a little activity that we started doing around here, and the kids really like it. (maybe they actually just like swinging things in the house and not getting yelled at for it, but they like it regardless.)

catching “butterflies” in the kitchen! or living room, bed room, wherever and whenever!

what you’ll need:

butterfly nets (hubby picked our’s up at the dollar store)
tissue paper or feathers
scissors (for YOU, not them)

simply cut up a piece of tissue paper (i used some old pieces from a bday gift) into strips that are about an inch wide by 3 inches long. twist the center, so that each piece looks like this:

sit on the couch or at the kitchen island, etc. in front of your kiddos, place a tissue paper “butterfly” (or feather) in the palm of your hand and BLOW! watch them squeal with joy and try to catch it! just make sure you’re paying attention to the nets flying past your head!!!

this is simple, cheap, and perfect for a day that’s either too hot, rainy, or if you just need a little fun after breakfast before you start the day’s activities.

***like what you see?  feel free to pin it!  simply hover over any pin-able image on klover house for the “pin” button to appear and pin to your heart’s content!***

(the primal pit paste is our contribution here at klover house. i personally use this product and will rave about it until my stink comes back! haha which i hope is never! seriously though, this is the first product i have found in nearly sixteen years ~since everyone smelled like ‘teen spirit’~ that has eliminated my arm pit odor! unreal. but real. totally real. and the ingredients are all natural! i am not a fan of chemicals in and on my body, so this made me especially happy. only four simple, clean, organic ingredients and zero stink. i’d say that’s enough to make you want to happy dance, right? and it’s your’s if you win! and if you don’t win, still go check out their website and buy this stuff up! i plan to write a review post at a later date with more details. and, no, i am not receiving anything in return for this stellar review. ha! i just like it that much and love to share about it! and the company graciously is gifting the product to you on our behalf! no need to smell ferociously after a day of chasing littles at the park! you’re welcome!)

*fyi* for anyone new to klover house, our site is still being referred to as “ava.n.isla” on the rafflecopter form below. once you click on the link, you will see our new name. oh lovely technicalities…

a Rafflecopter giveaway

hello, fall!

well, i have finally come to terms with it. it is fall. hello, fall! i can’t say “welcome,” b/c i’m afraid you are not. i know, i know… how can i not embrace the season that is home to my favorite holiday (thanksgiving), my birthday, pumpkin pie, hot apple cider, gorgeous, colorful leaves, and warm, cozy soups galore???

easy, peeps. IT”S COLD!!!!

ok, so i don’t like cold weather. i used to wear sweaters in florida when it hit 70 degrees. i know, it’s like a sickness or something. i just want to be warm all.of.the.time. period.

plus, football steals my spouse for like a gazillion weekends in a row or something, & i don’t like that either.

but, anyway, i’m over my poutfest, & i’m doing something about it! i pulled up my big-girl woolly socks today, & i’m gonna tell you what little fall things i’ve allowed into our home as of late. (craft now, recipe later.)

😉 you know i’m half teasing, right? i’m not that whiny about fall. just a little bit.

anyway…crafts!

here’s an easy little craft we completed in a half hour or so the other morning. you know that happy little space between breakfast & nap time? this is our craft time on the days i can handle a craft w/four toddlers.

i picked up these foam pumpkins from the dollar section of target a couple of weeks ago. the kiddos went to town on them with fall colored washable markers. they had a blast.

isla immediately turned her’s over to the backside (with writing/trademark – you know, the not so pretty side) & colored away. no matter how many times i turned that stinker back over, she flipped it right back. okay, isla rae, whatever you say, goes.

b-man – he’s a “dotter.” he liked just slamming the tip of every marker right into a single spot over & over again. he’s quite talented at making dots.

ava & brynn…well, let’s just say, not only did they enjoy coloring their pumpkins, but also their faces, tongues, hands, & ankles. let’s pray body art is not in their future. amen.

overall, it was easy, quick, relatively painless, & fun for all.

i took pics of them while they were being artsy, & then printed them out on just some plain white paper in black & white. i attached the little pic to each child’s pumpkin, wrote their names & date on the back (or the front, rather w/isla’s), & penned the little saying, “cutest pumpkins in the patch. [their name] 2012” on the “fronts.” done! cute, huh?

b-man had already taken his home before i was able to finish & hang the girls’, so you’ll have to pretend there’s a 4th little pumpkin there. 🙂

i think they really are the cutest little pumpkins in the patch! love those kiddos.
