i looked in our refrigerator…not much to look at these days (we’re moving in 11 days, so i’m keeping it to a minimum. and by ‘minimum’ i’m talkin’ grapes, blueberries, juice, milk, mandarin oranges, yogurt, eggs, deli meat, cheese, and condiments…hmmm. how ya’ gonna pull off this one tonight, mama?
then, i remembered seeing all of those pins online of those ham and cheese sandwiches on hawaiian sweet rolls. well, i didn’t have sweet rolls, so i improvised. voila! dinner is served and was actually a hit!
here’s the magic you can work in your own kitchen in under 30 minutes and for less than $12… (this is seriously so simple!)
take any leftover rolls (i had five hot dog buns from this past weekend) and split them in half (to resemble a mini dinner roll)
line the bottom of a glass dish with the bun bottoms
top your bottoms with some deli ham (i used my kitchen scissors to make appropriately-sized pieces)
load them up with cheese (we had an italian shredded mix) and top them with other halves of the buns
make your sauce…
in a small saucepan combine:
one stick of butter (melt)
one tbsp yellow mustard
one tbsp honey
two tbsp brown sugar
one tbsp poppy seeds
one teaspoon dry mustard (optional)
stir over low heat until fully combined and pour it over your sandwiches
completely cover with foil and bake at 375 for 25 minutes
done and delish!
the sauce will caramelize on the bottom edges and actually crisp up and taste like caramel! oh so yummy!
we served these little guys with mandarin oranges, fresh pineapple, and baked beans. (we’re also working on depleting our pantry, and i’m down to chicken noodle soup, cereal, vinegar, rice, and baked beans, so baked beans won!) i imagine these would also be so good with a tasty little side salad!
try it out one night! beats your typical grilled cheese any day!
